It'll take an hour to do. Don't let this put you off; done properly this is likely to be the best paid hour of work you do all year. Make sure you've got the time to do it (a lunch break perhaps, or while nothing good is on the telly for a while!). If this isn't do-able, then by registering for free you can save where you got to and return whenever you want.
Get all the info you need. The best, most useful budgets don't guesstimate, suppose or say 'Ish'. Get at least three months worth of bank statements together; these will truthfully show what you spend and when you spend it. Lists of standing orders and direct debits are crucial, as is all the rest of the spending.
This will get you into 90%+ accuracy. To push on up to perfection, grab your payslips and bills too, so that everything is logged, checked and entered correctly to the penny.
Dig out receipts too. Bank and Credit Card statements reveal everything you spend on plastic, but cash can be a pesky thing to pin down. Hunt out as many receipts as you can manage, for food shopping, treats for the kids and anything else.
